MoI: No request for investigation from Venezuela, Macedonian IP addresses don’t necessarily indicate attacks came from here

Skopje, 30 July 2024 (MIA) - The Ministry of Interior said in a press release Tuesday that its Sector for Computer Crime is monitoring the situation over the claim from Venezuela about alleged hacking attacks by users with Macedonian IP addresses during their elections. It said the South American country has not submitted any requests or information for the Interior Ministry to investigate.

“Regarding articles over statements by the authorities in Venezuela that alleged hacking DDoS attacks occurred during the elections held on July 28, 2024, the Ministry of Interior is informing the public that the Sector for Computer Crime is monitoring the situation over the alleged accusations against Macedonian nationals, and we note that so far we have not received any requests or information on this by the authorities in Venezuela for further investigations from our side,” the Ministry said.

The Ministry pointed out that “even if Macedonian IP addresses were involved in an alleged attack, it doesn’t necessarily indicate they originate from Macedonia“, pointing to the use of VPN or computers being part of a larger botnet network as possibilities.
