Miteva on Osmani's statements on constitutional amendments: Doubting sincerity of their intentions

Skopje, 15 October 2024 (MIA) - We doubt the sincerity of their intentions, and the former Foreign Minister has the least credibility to speak on this issue, Government Spokesperson Marija Miteva said on Tuesday commenting on former Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani's statement about adopting constitutional amendments, but with a clause according to which they will not be applicable if Bulgaria continues to block the country's EU membership in the next five years.

"We saw the statement of the former Foreign Minister, and we believe that he has the least credibility to speak on this issue because we doubt the sincerity of their intentions in giving proposals and solutions on the current situation we are in, in terms of this issue," Miteva told a press conference at the Government.

In response to a reporter's question in what sense does the Government 'doubt', Miteva underlined that the doubt is in terms of "the intention of the proposals they are giving now as draft-solutions".

Osmani told TV21 on Tuesday that the country should implement the constitutional amendments by including a clause in the law on the implementation of the Constitution.

"I will go a step further, if constitutional amendments are adopted today, we can insert a clause in the law on the implementation of the Constitution which states that if in the next five years Bulgaria continues to hinder North Macedonia on issues unrelated to EU, the Parliament has a right to suspend constitutional amendments, but they should enter into force now," Osmani said. ssh/nn/
