Mickoski on Glavchev meeting: Relations should ease, we should look to the future and cooperate

Skopje, 11 July 2024 (MIA) – Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski in a Facebook post said that he briefly met with the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Dimitar Glavchev on the sidelines of the official family photo session of the heads of government and state at the Washington NATO Summit.

“As it was concluded that relations should ease, I stressed that we should look to the future and use ways for cooperation. Topics from the past and the opening of new obstacles won’t bring the two nations closer and that efforts and steps should be made, which will re-establish trust between the countries to the level of the period before the veto and the launch of politics of obstructions,” said Mickoski.

Referring to his talks with Mickoski, Bulgarian PM Glavchev said they discussed the need to normalize mutual relations restoring them to pre-2017 level, when the Friendship Treaty was signed.

"We both share that view, so we'll see what happens. There is nothing better than nice and good relations between neighbours. It can even be said that we are more than neighbours with the Republic of North Macedonia," Glavchev added.

The Bulgarian PM said tensions in mutual relations should be eased, primarily in statements given, because there are no tensions between the citizens and peoples of the two neighbouring countries, and if politicians do not help develop such relations, they should neither hinder them.

According to him, when cooperation is at a satisfactory level, connection should start to develop in all aspects, including in transport, the economy, etc.

"However, the obligations undertaken should also be fulfilled. Here I am not only talking about North Macedonia, but all the Western Balkan countries. Our position is also the European position that all EU candidate countries must comply with the requirements," Glavchev added. ba/nn/
