Mickoski on constitutional amendments: Gov't will not enter into any process without a prior clear strategy, agreement

Skopje, 7 July 2025 (MIA) - Commenting on constitutional amendments, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said this Government will not enter into any process without a prior clear strategy and a clear agreement. In response to a reporter's question at Monday's press conference on whether Sofia would come out with new demands after it was announced that over 216,000 Macedonian citizens had been issued Bulgarian passports, he said that Sofia's goal is to include several hundred people from the Bulgarian community in the Constitution and refer to that number.

"The goal of official Sofia is to include several hundred Macedonian citizens who are part of the Bulgarian community in the Constitution, and refer to that number saying that the census data is not accurate and that the presence of the Bulgarian minority in Macedonia is more than 10 percent. And it will demand appropriate representation," Mickoski said in response to a reporter's question.

According to him, the previous government has led the country to this situation.

"Unfortunately, those from the previous government failed to see this and led us to this situation, although we warned them back then that this was the ultimate goal. While Bujar Osmani, Dimitar Kovachevski, Bojan Marichikj, sold out and gullibly said that they had resolved the issue, in essence they failed to see the real strategy. But, fortunately for the Macedonian citizens, we are now the Government, and we will not enter any process so gullibly, without a prior clear strategy and a clear agreement," said Mickoski.

At the end of last month, Bulgarian Interior Minister Daniel Mitov cited data that a total of 216,594 Bulgarian passports were issued to people with Macedonian citizenship between January 1, 2007and June 17, 2025, Bulgarian media reported.
