Mickoski on announced equal representation law: Any legislation must be in line with the Constitution

Skopje, 12 October 2024 (MIA) – Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Saturday that a new legislation on equal representation, announced to be prepared following the scrapping of the so-called Balancer tool, must be in line with the Constitution and the recommendations of the Venice Commission.

“Perhaps, it would be better to send the bill once it is done to the Venice Commission before it is passes in Parliament,” he told a news conference Saturday.

It was recently announced that a new equal representation law will be proposed after earlier this week, the Constitutional Court abolished the Balancer tool - designed to promote ethnic diversity through affirmative action in hiring governmental workers.

Earlier today, Defense Minister Vlado Misajlovski when asked whether his ministry would have any proposal in the drafting of a new legislation on equal representation, said: “We are ready to improve any legislation that is proposed.”

“But, I’d say that we, as institutions, will seek quality and professionalism,” he told reporters.

Answering the same question, Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski said the institutions should focus on what is their jurisdiction.

“The Constitutional Court is tasked to monitor the alignment of laws with the Constitution. The Interior Ministry is tasked to ensure a peaceful and safe life in Macedonia,” he stated.

Defense Minister Vlado Misajlovski, Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski, Chief of the General Staff, Major General Sashko Lafchiski, and the head of the Public Security Bureau, Aleksandar Janev, visited the members of the Special Forces Battalion and the Rapid Deployment Unit that are holding a joint training.
