Skopje, 10 June 2025 (MIA) – The gas pipeline with Greece is being build after a deadlock because the former government by SDSM and DUI had created a specification that didn’t correspond with the criteria, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Tuesday when asked about the gas pipeline with Greece and its significance for the country.
He told reporters that the project had been stuck for seven years. “We fast-tracked the project, we made corrections with the new Nomagas leadership, including the tender paperwork,” Mickoski stated adding the tender procedure was completed, an agreement was signed with a constructor and construction works are ongoing.
According to him, the project is a crucial one because it is a two-day rather than being one-way like the pipeline from Bulgaria. “I hope soon the construction of the northern interconnector with Serbia will start soon,” said the prime minister.
The construction of the two gas pipelines with Greece and Serbia, Mickoski added, will put us on the map of transit gas, including the transit of gas from the south – the Alexandroupolis cterminal and other countries exporting gas, Azerbaijan, Qatar, etc, toward central Europe.
“The country will gain a major geostrategic importance. It is one of my personal goals in this first four-year term,” stressed Mickoski.
On May 7, the Energy Ministry, the company Nomagas and the constructor “Rapid Build” signed an agreement for the 59.9-million-euro project. The interconnector from Negotino to Gevgelija, which should be connected to the Greek section built from Nea Mesimvria to the border, will be completed in about two years. The gas pipeline will be inaugurated in 2027. The connection will enable Macedonia to be supplied with both natural and liquid gas from the terminals in Revitusa and Alexandroupolis. The Kumanovo-based company “Rapid Build” won the tender after sending an offer that was 12 million euros lower than the second bid by a Serbian company.
