Mickoski: Europe has the chance to fix historic injustice

Skopje, 2 June 2025 (MIA) – The working draft of EP rapporteur Waitz’s report is what it is, which is important, because for the first time a separate Macedonian identity is mentioned, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said responding to a journalist’s question on Monday. Europe, he noted, has a chance to fix the historic injustice that we have a Macedonian identity and separate Macedonian language, but some MEPs think differently.
“A few of his colleagues, MEPs who, unfortunately, come from our sister party GERB have proposed that the word “current” should be included before Macedonian identity. It’s no surprise to us, because we have been talking about this from the start of this adventure of accepting of the former administration, Bujar Osmani and Dimitar Kovachevski, that what’s concealed behind all of this is the creation of an artificial nation, current Macedonian nation,” stated Mickoski.
He said he had had intensive talks with several influential officials in both the EP and in Brussels.
If this comes to fruition, according to Mickoski, it will be a confirmation that it doesn’t involve a few hundred citizens that consider themselves to be part of the Bulgarian community in Macedonia, but it is an attempt to create a new, artificial, current Macedonian nation founded on the roots of the Bulgarian nation.
“I will never accept this because it has nothing to do with either European or with any other values. It once again proves the extent of ignorance and adventure undertaken by Bujar Osmani and Dimitar Kovachevski,” the premier said criticizing his predecessor Kovachevski and former foreign minister Bujar Osmani for accepting the so called “French proposal”.
“Now, I’m waiting for Europe to respond. Europe now has a chance to fix a historic injustice inflicted by Bujar Osmani and Dimitar Kovachevski accepting what had been put on the table in front of them,” said Mickoski.
The truth us, he added, that Sofia has remained a hostage of [Todor] Zhivkov’s policies – the creation of a new Macedonian nation founded on the foundations of the Bulgarian nation.
