Mickoski: Constitution and laws must be respected

Skopje, 5 September 2024 (MIA) - I am a person who respects the Constitution and the laws and I don't expect that anyone who is given a salary and has privileges at the citizens' expense to disrespect Macedonian laws and the Constitution, said Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski on Thursday.

PM Mickoski was asked by reporters to comment on the Law on Languages that the Constitutional Court is set to discuss, saying he does not expect any destabilization in the country.

"I might have an issue with certain aspects related to the Constitution as well, things that I intimately don't agree with such as the use of the North preceding our name but I will stand behind that sign while I hold this office because I do not want to violate the Macedonian Constitution and the Macedonian laws. You might sometimes not like the reality but it must be accepted if you truly fight for the rule of law," Mickoski told a press conference.

According to him, things in life are not always as one wants them to be, "and this is the cruelty of the job we are in".

"This is a rule of the game - rule of law, observance of laws and constitution - and no one should have any doubt about it. I again ask against putting pressure on courts, despite the low trust in them," said Mickoski.

The PM reiterated there are no indications that the country's security is under threat, noting that the situation is stable.

"However, there are certain structures in the society that want to protect their crimes and capital by causing incidents and destabilization. If this happens, we will respond resolutely in protecting the security of our homeland," said Mickoski.
