Michel: North Macedonia and Albania to start EU talks as soon as possible
Skopje, 16 June 2022 (MIA) - European Council President Charles Michel and Thursday that North Macedonia and Albania should start the European Union accession negotiations as soon as possible, which is important for both countries but also for the region in general, especially in the context of the new geopolitical developments. “The war in Ukraine has opened a new chapter in European history and put enlargement to the forefront. I will send a clear message – EU is fully committed to your Union accession. The start of talks with North Macedonia and Albania should come as soon as possible. This is a top priority and we support all efforts to reach a mutually acceptable solution to the open bilateral issue with Bulgaria. I am engaged together with France and the EU to help move this process forward and I am convinced that we will have a positive development very soon, which is important for your county and the region,” Michel told a joint press conference with President Stevo Pendarovski. He said a meeting of the 27 EU member-states and countries of the Western Balkans would take place next week, an opportunity for discussions and coordination amid “a critical moment in history.” “We want and work on unblocking the process for North Macedonia and Albania. I am not sure what will happen at the coming European Council meeting but we will do everything to take decisive steps,” noted Michel when asked about the contents of the French proposal aimed at lifting the Bulgarian veto. Michel and Pendarovski also referred to the idea of a European political community. “Let me be clear: this is no alternative to the enlargement process. I am certain this process will enhance our cooperation. Moreover, it will be an incentive for cooperation of partners with the EU,” said Michel.
