MFAFT: Decision to co-sponsor Ukraine resolution not to be interpreted as withdrawal or change of prior positions

Skopje, 24 February 2025 (MIA) - North Macedonia's decisions regarding the support and voting on United Nations General Assembly resolutions are taken after thorough analysis of current global foreign-policy developments, positions by influential international stakeholders, our commitment to promote peace, security and prosperity across the world, as well as the country's strategic interest to create a stable position and build stronger relations with our strategic partners, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade (MFAFT) on Monday.
Earlier, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski was quizzed by reporters why has the country decided to co-sponsor the U.S. draft resolution on Ukraine, saying he expects it to be supported by the majority in the UN.
The MFAFT said in a press release it has considered the strong commitment by the U.S. President and his administration for sooner end of the war between Ukraine and the Russian Federation through effective and direct talks, aimed at permanent peace and security in Ukraine and the broader region.
It adds that decisions regarding the country's sponsorship and voting on UNGA resolutions should not be interpreted as withdrawal or change of prior positions.
"On the contrary, they reaffirm North Macedonia's firm support for Ukraine and condemnation of the Russian Federation's aggression, while highlighting the strong solidarity and responsibility with the Ukrainian people and its efforts to fully protect its territorial integrity, sovereignty, independence, freedom and democracy," reads the press release.
The MFA recalls that over the past three years, but also now and in the future, the Republic of North Macedonia strongly supports the efforts by the international community, especially the U.S. and Europe, for sooner end of the conflict and securing a permanent and sustainable peace in Ukraine, the region and the globe.
