Mexhiti says changes are coming, boycott of presidential election not an option for Worth It coalition

Mexhiti says changes are coming, boycott of presidential election not an option for Worth It coalition

Skopje, 3 May 2024 (MIA) - Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Worth It coalition leaders accused DUI of intentions to cause a political crisis in the country in fear of defeat in the elections, and called on the party leader Ali Ahmeti to answer whether DUI was preparing a boycott of the second round of the presidential elections.

Izet Mexhiti of the Worth It coalition asked why is DUI working against the interests of the EU and the United States, demanding an answer to these questions which he said are of vital importance for the country's future.

"Now when the time comes to take responsibility for the corruption scandals, you sneakily try to use the entire Albanian people as a shield, as well as the smaller ethnic communities that you use as hostages. These tricks have already been seen, they do not work. After May 8, there will be a Government with Worth It as the only legitimate political representative of the Albanians. There will also be a Badinter majority, the foundations of the Ohrid Framework Agreement will be ensured and there will be responsibility for all those who worked against the laws. You cannot and must not make a problem for the country's survival out of DUI going in opposition. This is extremely irresponsible and cowardly. That is why we call on you to stop shaming Albanians and the great fighters of the UCK. It's not the end of the world if you go in opposition. As legalist democrats with our political credibility, we guarantee that there will be no revanchism, but there will be responsibility only in line with proper court proceedings," Mexhiti said.

He did not give a direct answer to a reporter's question about whether Worth It will join a coalition with VMRO-DPMNE and ZNAM, but said that changes are coming as well as a new government.

"We are focused on promoting our program, our platform, on direct meetings with the voters intensively. And it seems that the will of the people is to have changes and there will be a government not with 61 but with over 70 MPs. It will have the support of most of the Albanian MPs and a large majority with Badinter," said Mexhiti.

To a rhetorical question that Worth It will still not have the two-thirds majority required for the adoption of the constitutional amendments, Mexhiti said "I wouldn't say so".

Asked if Worth It will call on their voters to back one of the two presidential candidates in the second round of the elections, Mexhiti said to vote is the citizens' right and Worth It will not give any directions on it.

He reaffirmed that a boycott of the elections was not an option for the Worth It coalition.

"I believe the turnout will be even higher on May 8 since the (presidential) elections are held together with the parliamentary elections. The boycott is called for by those who have lost their compass," Mexhity said among other.
