Mexhiti: Mortality rate of preterm births down by 74 percent since 2017

Skopje, 17 November 2023 (MIA) – On the occasion of Nov. 17, World Prematurity Day, Health Minister Fatmir Mexhiti visited the Skopje-based Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic on Friday, where he stressed that the mortality rate of premature babies has dropped by 74 percent since 2017, adding that in 2016 this figure stood at 25 percent, while in 2023 it is 5.6.

“The journey that prematurely born babies and their families have to go through isn’t simple, it requires great strength, resilience and dedication. I am glad that I am able to share that we are winning the battles with the challenges caused by preterm births more frequently,” said Mexhiti.

According to Mexhiti, this is a result of the improvement of conditions and investments in modern equipment at the Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic, as well as staff training.

“Since 2017, we have had great results because there is an efficient strategy improving the conditions for mothers and providing excellent care for newborns. The health of mothers and newborns is imperative for every successful healthcare system,” said Mexhiti, noting that the development and implementation of the Perinatal Care Master Plan is a result of joint commitments with the World Health Organization, UNICEF and UNFPA.

Mexhiti said the Ministry of Health will remain committed to the creation of an environment that will provide babies born prematurely with the highest standards of care, access to innovative treatments and the necessary support for development.
