Mexhiti in Washington: North Macedonia aims to phase out use of coal by 2050

Skopje, 11 September 2024 (MIA) - North Macedonia aims to eliminate the use of coal for energy needs by 2050, complying with the EU's deadlines for a transition to renewable energy sources, First Deputy PM and Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Izet Mexhiti told the 9th Central and Eastern European Energy Security Conference in Washington.

He pointed out that the transition from coal by 2050 requires strong financial and technical support, which are key to lasting transformation and ensuring a just transition for affected communities, the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning said in a press release.

Mexhiti stressed that accelerating the energy transition requires transatlantic commitment, with assistance in improving regulatory frameworks and energy infrastructure. The creation of green financing mechanisms, he added, would facilitate the transition away from coal and the development of clean energy, while regional cooperation through the Energy Community would help design common strategies for this purpose.

"Given North Macedonia's strategic position in the Balkans, as well as the impact of the war in Ukraine and the Russian influence, I want to highlight the need for increased involvement of the United States and the EU. This support is vital to ensuring energy independence and reducing Russian influence in the region," Mexhiti told the energy security conference in Washington.
