Mexhiti: Country facing epidemic of corruption, considering proposals by coalition and strategic partners

Skopje, 8 July 2024 (MIA) - Asked about the potential dissolution of the Judicial Council, First Deputy PM and Minister of Environment and Physical Planning Izet Mexhiti told reporters Monday international factors and experts have noted that the country has been facing an epidemic of corruption the past years, which, he said, has also penetrated the judiciary and caused public trust to drop to only 3 percent.

“We are considering the proposals of our partners in the Government and the strategic partners over the best form for the judiciary and the restoration of the rule of law, since that is one of the most important pillars of a normal state and for our EU aspirations,” Mexhiti said.

The Deputy PM said there is an initiative to restore the Criminal Code provisions that refer to the abuse of official position.

“I think the amendments to the Criminal Code served some officials who in the past ran from the country, ran from the judiciary. It was a bad message when it comes to corruption. It represented indirect assistance for corruption. I think we will seriously think about the restoration of the rule of law and the necessary amendments so that anyone who has broken the law answers to the judicial bodies,” Mexhiti said.
