Martin Godzhoski retrieves Lake Ohrid cross

Ohrid, 19 January 2025 (MIA) – Martin Godzhoski from Varosh is the believer who among the participating several hundred swimmers retrieved the Holy Cross after it was placed into the waters of Ohrid Lake by the Head of the Macedonian Orthodox Church, Archbishop of Ohrid and Macedonia, HH Stefan.

This is the second time Godzhoski has retrieved the cross, after he first did it in 2022.

"This year I was lucky again to be the first to retrieve the Holy Cross. This is a huge honor for me, for my family, for my people," said Godzhoski.

"The water was cold, just like other years, the cross always finds its way to those meant to have it," he added, sending wishes for good health and prosperity.

HH Stefan and Ohrid Mayor Kiril Pecakov congratulated Godzhoski observing a traditional gift-giving custom.

Previously, the Head of the Macedonian Orthodox Church, Archbishop of Ohrid and Macedonia, HH Stefan led the Epiphany liturgy, addressing the believers gathered in Ohrid.

Traditionally, the Ohrid events have attracted thousands of believers and visitors.

Ohrid Mayor Kiril Pecakov wished all Orthodox Christian believers good luck, health and success.

"This year, as befits us, we had the honor of having the cross lowered in the lake by the Archbishop Stefan. Ohrid this year was by all parameters the central manifestation for Epiphany," said Pecakov.

SDSM leader Venko Filipche, who also attended the event in Ohrid, sent an Epiphany greeting to the Orthodox faithful.

"I congratulate Martin on retrieving the cross today. I wish him and all who entered the cold waters of the lake today happiness, health and success, this is a sign that they have great mental and physical strength. Also, I would like to take this opportunity to say that these holidays should always remind us that in the name of solidarity we work together, improve society, create equal and better opportunities for everyone, without discrimination against any person," said Filipche.

This year’s Epiphany celebration continues at the Ohrid Square, with performances by Macedonian singers Suzana Spasovska, Bojana Skenderovski, Mile Kuzmanovski and the DNK band.

St. John the Baptist, or Fisherman’s Day celebrations continue on Monday in Ohrid, set to offer a rich cultural and entertainment content.
