Marichikj - Bislimi: Together on the European path, towards a better future

Skopje, 12 May 2023 (MIA) - Deputy PM for European Affairs Bojan Marichikj met Friday with Kosovo's First Deputy PM for European Integration, Development and Dialogue, Besnik Bislimi, reaffirming excellent friendly relations between the two countries, particularly in the area of European integration and the IPA Cross-Border Cooperation Programme, the Secretariat for European Affairs said in a press release.

"It is a common interest to move forward, all together. Our path to the EU is not easy, but with a common approach and cooperation we will make it faster and easier. The current excellent cooperation at all levels between the two countries can be promoted within the framework of the 2016 Cooperation Agreement in EU integration affairs, as well as through regional projects, through which we will reach European standards faster," said Marichikj.

He noted that the region has already made progress in the European integration, and mentioned the granting of candidate status to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo's visa liberalisation application, adding that such trend must continue, with a joint commitment.

"Whether we make a smaller or bigger step towards the EU is up to us, but we must take a step forward towards the EU every year. That is why it is important for the Western Balkan countries to sit at the same table and demonstrate consensus, togetherness and readiness to move together towards the EU," Marichikj pointed out, initiating a joint meeting of all European integration ministers from the countries in the region.

Bislimi said the two countries share common values and aspirations for European Union membership, noting it is extremely important that Kosovo has a sincere partner such as North Macedonia in achieving its strategic goal.

"Many challenges are ahead of us. It is important to stay firmly on the European path. The long time spent in the EU's waiting room has made us more ready to implement the reforms and complete the negotiation process," said Deputy PM Bislimi.

Talks also tackled the importance of regional cooperation and resolving open issues, as a condition for faster progress both in terms of reforms and towards the EU. In this regard, Marichikj pointed out that the country will continue to support the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, expressing hope that what has been agreed between the two sides in Ohrid will be a good basis for reaching a European compromise, which will benefit the entire region.

In Pristina, Maricihikj will also participate in a conference within the Balkan Dialogues initiative, on the topic: “EU and Western Balkans: Security, Regional Cooperation and Integration,” upon the invitation of the Balkan Policy Research Group, Foundation BFPE for a Responsible Society and the Atlantic Council, said the Secretariat for European Affairs in a press release.
