Major storm in Europe results in power outages and downed trees

Brussels, 5 October 2025 (dpa/MIA) - A storm depression over parts of Europe has caused trees to fall and flight cancellations, but there has been no major damage so far.

Fire services had to be deployed in several countries.

In Belgium's capital, Brussels, there were around 90 fire service operations, mostly due to fallen trees or broken branches, Belgian news agency Belga reported on Sunday. There were also numerous operations and property damage in other parts of the country.

In Scotland and Norway, some households were still without power on Sunday morning. They were expected to be reconnected gradually. Power lines were severely damaged by falling trees.

According to the Norwegian broadcaster NRK, tens of thousands of households in the south and centre of the Scandinavian country were still without power on Sunday morning.

Disruptions to air and rail traffic

In Scotland, passengers should continue to expect disruptions in rail traffic as repair work continued, according to Britain's Press Association (PA).

In the Netherlands, the storm warning from Saturday has now been lifted. No major damage was reported, but there were disruptions on roads due to fallen trees.

At Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, where around 150 incoming and outgoing flights were cancelled on Saturday, the situation has largely normalized.

However, as a precaution, 10 flights were cancelled for Sunday. This is expected to remain the case, said a spokesman for the airline KLM.
