Mexico City, 21 April 2026 (dpa/MIA) - A Canadian woman was killed and at least 13 other foreign visitors were injured when a gunman opened fire at Mexico's Teotihuacan archaeological site, authorities said on Monday.

The shooting at one of Mexico's most important tourist attractions, about an hour north of the country's capital, comes just weeks before the country co-hosts the football World Cup.

An armed man opened fire for reasons that remain unclear before taking his own life, Mexican security authorities said.

"What happened today in Teotihuacan pains us deeply," President Claudia Sheinbaum wrote on X.

She expressed solidarity with those affected and their families. The Mexican government was in contact with the Canadian embassy, Sheinbaum said.

According to Mexico's Security Cabinet, tourists from Colombia, Canada, Russia, Brazil and the United States were injured, seven of them by gunfire. Others were injured in falls.

Those with gunshot wounds included a 6-year-old child from Colombia and a 13-year-old girl from Brazil.

Teotihuacan is one of Mexico's most important archaeological sites. The site is home to the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon and the Temple of the Feathered Serpent.

A video posted on X appeared to show the gunman firing shots from the Pyramid of the Moon.

The shooting was a rare act of violence at the otherwise peaceful ancient city and came ahead of the World Cup, which Mexico, Canada and the United States are jointly hosting in June and July.

At its height in the 5th and 6th centuries, Teotihuacan was the most important metropolis in Mesoamerica and one of the largest cities in the world.

The site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
