Legal amendments for transformation of ministries to be submitted on Monday

Skopje, 31 May 2024 (MIA) – On Monday, a group of MPs from the new ruling majority is expected to submit legislative amendments to the Parliament, aiming to establish new ministries and transform existing ones, party sources told MIA.

On Thursday, Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi said that at the first session he will convene, prior to government formation, amendments to systemic laws will be discussed to enable the establishment of new ministries and transformation of existing ones. But also, amendments aimed at preventing of early local elections could be on the agenda.

“Now we are poised to face the challenge of having municipal officials, who will be elected for five, six months, and then for seven, eight months, to have elections again. I think it's not right, and it's contrary to the Constitution for someone to be elected with a four-year term, while someone else is elected with the same votes in elections but with an eight-month mandate. We believe it's unconstitutional and should be corrected with a law that will make it possible,” Gashi said in an interview with Radio Free Europe.

The amendments to these systemic laws require a two-thirds majority.
