Law on asset confiscation in civil proceedings an added anti-corruption facility: gov't

Skopje, 28 February 2024 (MIA) - The Parliament adopted Wednesday the Law on Asset Confiscation in Civil Proceedings, initiated by Deputy PM for Good Governance Policies Slavica Grkovska.

The law's adoption ensures an added anti-corruption facility in the country's legislation, leading to better results in countering corruption and organized crime, namely more efficient fight against impunity and illicit acquiring of assets, the Government said in a press release.

The law does not replace confiscation in criminal proceedings but serves as an added facility, providing an option for the confiscated assets to be used for societal purposes.

The law aims to protect North Macedonia's public interest in a way that it prevents use of the illicit assets, restricting the right of ownership in line with the Constitution and international standards, and case law of the European Court of Human Rights for this type of confiscation, reads the press release.
