Lajčak says implementation annex to be basis of Belgrade-Pristina discussions in Ohrid

Lajčak says implementation annex to be basis of Belgrade-Pristina discussions in Ohrid

Belgrade, 16 March 2023 (MIA) - The EU Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue, Miroslav Lajčak, said the acceptance of the European proposal was a positive message. According to him, it is now necessary to focus on the implementation annex to the agreement on normalization of relations, which will be the main topic of the upcoming meeting in Ohrid, MIA’s Belgrade correspondent reports.

To have it implemented we need to know the exact sequencing of steps, we need to know timelines, we need to know who does what and by which date, so that we turn this text into a legally binding commitment, Lajčak told an online conference on Europe and Russia on the Balkan Front, organized by the Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI).

“After the agreement is accepted, we are focusing now on the implementation annex because this is a key element to make it work,” he said.

Lajčak said the purpose of his latest trip to Pristina and Belgrade was to hear the comments of both sides on the implementation annex, and based on the comments received, a “new consolidated version of the annex based on the original text” is now being prepared for the meeting in Ohrid on Saturday.

“This should be the basis of our discussion in Ohrid, and if we succeed on agreeing on this annex, then we have the deal,” said Lajčak.

He said the latest meeting between Vučić and Kurti on February 27 has so far been the best discussion, not easy, but very open and very honest.

He also noted that the geopolitical situation has changed, the EU’s understanding of its role in the Western Balkans has changed, it has become more strategic, more political.

“It’s really important that we convey the message that the EU is now ready for the Balkans probably more than the Balkans are ready for the European Union, so understanding that the door is open again is extremely important,” said Lajčak.
