Kovachevski: Uninterrupted supply of lignite, coal and mazut through Greece agreed on in Athens
Athens, 13 September 2022 (MIA) – After a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens on Tuesday, North Macedonia’s Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski said the two agreed on supply of lignite and coal from the mines in Greece in the coming period, supply of mazut, as well as possibility of Greek investment with construction of a gas power plant of up to 200 MW, MIA’s Athens correspondent reports.
PM Kovachevski told Macedonian reporters who ware covering his working visit to Greece that talks with PM Mitsotakis focused on the energy crisis and energy cooperation ahead of the harsh winter.
He added that the meeting was held in a positive atmosphere, and discussed about concrete agreements aimed at successfully dealing with the effects of the energy crisis and the war in Ukraine.
As regards the concrete agreements for the supply of lignite, coal and mazut through Greece, he stressed that should there be any restriction for Greece, it will not affect the country.
He noted that Greece has expressed will to build a gas plant of up to 200 MW in North Macedonia, pointing out that this would be a major and strategic investment.
Regarding energy transformation, he mentioned the "Evzoni" interconnector for which a procedure of market testing, i.e. economic viability, has already begun.
Kovachevski also mentioned the Chebren project on which Greek company PPS has sent a complete bid, noting that if it passes evaluation filters by the institutions, there will be an offer for construction by the end of the year.
In addition, Kovachevski said the Greek PM at the meeting voiced satisfaction with North Macedonia starting the EU accession negotiations, and offered Greek support in the process.
