Skopje, 14 September 2023 (MIA) – Every law can undergo modifications in Parliament, go through a debate… I think this should be done because this is a law that improves the procedures, it speeds up the procedures. It doesn’t provide any amnesty to people who have committed major offences, which are listed in the law. That’s why I don’t think it should be dismissed through blockades, but that a parliamentary debate should be launched, said Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski in answer to journalist’s questions Thursday.

The Prime Minister said the Government will review the Law on Amnesty at one of the coming sessions and then forward it to the MPs, where all parliamentary groups will have a chance to state their position, stressing that no one will benefit by blocking it.

“The citizens have had enough fighting, arguments and endless press conferences accusing everyone of something. The citizens need projects, work, infrastructural projects, they need better living conditions. My approach is dialogue, a conversation based on facts and work with the goal of fulfilling the interest of the citizens. That’s why I think this is the approach the opposition should take, because that’s how we will promote the processes we have in the country,” said Prime Minister Kovachevski.

VMRO-DPMNE leader Hristijan Mickoski said Thursday that there is neither any formal nor informal communication with the Government, and that the party will block the new Amnesty Law through democratic tools at their disposal.

"The law that has been proposed, and is available to the public as of yesterday, is a law on amnesty of criminals for whom certain political parties in the past promised that they would either be freed completely or partially. Unfortunately, those political parties or part of those political parties belong to the government today, and you can see that such a law does neither respond to the needs nor to the expectations of the citizens and therefore, VMRO-DPMNE will not only oppose this amnesty law, but will also block it, through democratic tools," said Mickoski.
