Skopje, 19 September 2023 (MIA) - Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski briefly met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the event marking the 50th anniversary of Germany's UN membership, which was held at the Organization's headquarters in New York, the Government said in a press release.
PM Kovachevski congratulated Chancellor Scholz on the 50th anniversary of Germany's UN accession, highlighting the Federal Republic of Germany's substantial contribution to the stability and security of the region, Europe and the world, reads the press release.
"The Prime Minister thanked the Chancellor for the cooperation between the two countries within the UN, as well as on a bilateral basis in the past 30 years, highlighting Germany as one of the country's closest European partners. Participants in the meeting noted that Germany expects North Macedonia in the European Union, pointing to the fact that European integration and the European path are the best and only alternative for the country. The statesmanlike decision that should be made in the coming period is the only chance to ensure the quality of life of Macedonian citizens according to European standards and achieve membership in the EU by 2030. Otherwise, interlocutors noted, the Macedonian citizens and the country will surely face isolation in the long-term, which is neither in the interest of North Macedonia nor the region nor Europe," the Government said.
PM Kovachevski, it adds, thanked Chancellor Scholz for the enormous support North Macedonia receives from Germany in terms of the country's democratic, European integration and economic development.
"It is clearly reflected in the resolution adopted by the German Bundestag, which reaffirms our commitment to accelerated European integration with reaffirmed and recognized Macedonian language, culture and identity. It is a confirmation of the sincere understanding that our great friend, the Federal Republic of Germany, has for the needs and national and strategic interests of the Macedonian citizens," PM Kovachevski told the meeting with Chancellor Scholz, as cited in the Government's press release.
