Kovachevski in Munich meets with Leyen, Sholz, Stoltenberg, Pelosi

Munich, 18 February 2023 (MIA) — On the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen; German Chancellor Olaf Scholz; NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg; and former Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.

 

“A cordial meeting with the President of the European Commission, Von der Leyen,” PM Kovachevski wrote on Facebook. 

 

“Once again, we stressed the importance of North Macedonia becoming a member of the EU as soon as possible. Our EU friends support us and help the country’s reform processes. The European path of the Western Balkans is important for regional stability, for the safe and prosperous life our citizens deserve.”

 

 

At the meeting with German Chancellor Scholz, Berlin's unequivocal support for North Macedonia's European path was highlighted.

 

“We discussed the need of speeding up the European integration, which is important for the security and stability of the region. Germany is our unwavering supporter and major partner in our country’s integration into the EU,” Kovachevski wrote.

 
 

After the panel "Beyond the Alliance: Partnering up for European Security'", the prime minister had a brief meeting with NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg.

 

“One year after the military aggression against Ukraine, NATO is united more than ever in supporting Ukraine, and it will support it as long as necessary,” Kovachevski wrote, adding that he told Stoltenberg that North Macedonia was fully committed to building partnerships and maintaining security in the Western Balkans and Europe.

 

 

Kovachevski in Munich followed the "The US in the world" panel, addressed by US Vice President Kamala Harris. She said Euro-Atlantic unity was strong and, referring to the anniversary of the brutal invasion of Russia agains Ukraine, said Kyiv will not surrender.

 

She thanked all NATO members for the strong Euro-Atlantic partnership, the PM wrote.

 

 

The prime minister also met with former US House Speaker Pelosi and thanked her for her long-term support and contribution to the strategic partnership between the United States and North Macedonia. mr/
