Kovachevski: All 120 MPs should support constitutional amendments
Skopje, 26 August 2022 (MIA) – The MPs as representatives of the citizens should be up to the task and all 120 of them should support the country on its path to full-fledged EU membership, said Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski on Friday, answering a journalist’s question on the constitutional amendments. Kovachevski pointed out that the constitutional amendments will go through a parliamentary discussion saying "it is something the country should do." At the same time, the Prime Minister said that issues like the constitutional amendments should not be exploited for party interests. “I believe that all 120 MPs should support the constitutional amendments because they will enable the inclusion of other ethnicities living in the country to the Constitution. We already have several other ethnicities in the Constitution, besides Macedonian. There are countries who even have 25 ethnicities in their constitutions, such as Croatia, and this only enriches their social cohesion. In regards to the number of MPs that would vote for the amendments, I said that it is the obligation of every MP, because they have an obligation towards the citizens and the country regarding its European future. This is why there will be a discussion in Parliament, based on arguments, facts and the future of the country,” said Kovachevski. According to the PM, when it comes to the political parties, there are two clearly differentiated coalitions – one which supports a European North Macedonia and together with the majority of the citizens wants to see the country as part of the EU, and the other – VMRO-DPMNE and Levica who oppose the EU and keep coming up with baseless arguments against EU membership. “The second coalition offers no alternative. One of VMRO-DPMNE’s coalition partners offers some kind of Asian union with central Asian countries which I believe is complete nonsense compared to EU integration,” said Kovachevski. ad/ba/
