Kovachevski – Lajčák: With the next step, North Macedonia to maintain the European course

Skopje, 19 September 2023 (MIA) – Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski and Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs Bojan Marichikj met on Tuesday in New York with the EU Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue and other Western Balkan regional issues, Miroslav Lajčák.

The meeting was focused on the current political issues in North Macedonia and the region and their effects in a broader security context. They jointly concluded that it is necessary to maintain the European course, with the next step in the coming period, in order for the state to ensure development, as well as to contribute to European stability, and for which the country has strong support in the European Union, reads the government’s press release.

In this regard, North Macedonia is expected to maintain the primacy as a regional leader in integrations, as an example of solving challenges through wise leadership and dialogue for other countries in the Western Balkans as well.

During the talks, they jointly underscored that any different action of the political parties in the Republic of North Macedonia outside the European agenda, threatens the country's European determination. By doing so, it questions the quality of life of Macedonian citizens and puts the country in a certain isolation in the long run, which affects the broader strategic goals of maintaining regional and European stability, especially in the current geopolitical context. Lajčák and Kovacevski concluded that the failure of North Macedonia will also be the failure of the European Union, reads the press release.
