Kovachevski – Koundouros: Greece voices strong support for start of North Macedonia’s EU talks as soon as possible
Skopje, 28 January 2022 (MIA) – Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski met Friday with Greek Ambassador to North Macedonia Roussos Koundouros.
Ambassador Koundouros conveyed Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis as well as Greece’s strong and unequivocal support for start of North Macedonia’s EU accession negotiations as soon as possible.
Participants in the meeting congratulated PM Kovachevski on his election and the election of the new Government, concluding there are conditions to further promote relations between the two countries, both in the area of energy and economy and in all other areas of importance for the citizens, the Government said in a press release.
Interlocutors noted that the European integration of the Western Balkans is a contribution to regional stability, an opportunity to implement European standards at home, and thus development of the region, which is seen as a benefit for all.
PM Kovachevski thanked Ambassador Koundouros for the support of the Greek PM and Greece for the country’s progress in European integration, following the NATO membership.
“The resolution of the political issues between North Macedonia and Greece with the Prespa Agreement opened up space for development of economic relations. As a country, we participate in the Alexandroupolis energy project, trade exchange with Greece is good and these are just some of the indicators that relations between the countries are going in a positive direction, and we continue cooperation in that direction,” PM Kovachevski said.
In addition, the press release reads, talks also tackled other current issues of importance for both countries.
