Kostadinovska-Stojchevska: Fulfilling UNESCO's recommendations, jointly enabling permanent protection of Ohrid region

Skopje, 28 March 2024 (MIA) - Culture Minister and president of the National Commission for UNESCO, Bisera Kostadinovska-Stojchevska, held a working meeting in Ohrid on Thursday with the representatives of UNESCO's Reactive Monitoring Mission, composed of members of the World Heritage Center, the International Council on Monuments and Sites and the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the Ministry of Culture said in a press release. 

The meeting was held at the Institute and Museum - Ohrid, and members of the National Coordination Team and the Museum director Irena Shajn also participated.

"The Ministry of Culture and the National Coordination Team are committed to the implementation of UNESCO's recommendations in the area of ​​cultural heritage protection. We are bent on the Ohrid Region and the preservation of the status of the prestigious UNESCO list. I am confident that united, all together, the central and the local government, as well as the non-governmental sector in joint coordination and accelerated dynamics, we will continue to fulfill UNESCO's guidelines in improving the situation with the rare natural and cultural heritage of our region," stressed Kostadinovska-Stojchevska, as cited in the press release.

Talks also tackled the current situation related to the protection of cultural heritage in the Ohrid Region, ways to overcome the challenges and the progress made by the state in relation to the latest UNESCO recommendations.  

The meeting was part of the agenda of a three-day joint reactive monitoring mission of the members from the UNESCO World Heritage Center, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), in cross-border World Heritage "Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid Region", in the Republic of Albania and in North Macedonia.
