Brussels, 3 June 2025 (MIA) — European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said Tuesday that the European Union's political goal was to open the Fundamentals cluster of the EU accession negotiations as soon as the required constitutional change is adopted.
In her opening remarks at the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs during the eighth High-Level Geopolitical Dialogue on the Neighborhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument Global Europe, Commissioner Kos offered to help facilitate talks on the issue.
"Bulgaria and North Macedonia need to start intense talks and find a solution to this bilateral issue," Kos said. "I stand ready to be the facilitator, if needed."
She said the international order was going through "a deep transformation" and "the global landscape has dramatically changed" in the six months since she had taken office.
It was in the security interest of the continent, Kos added, that the unificiation of Europe gets completed.
"For me, enlargement is much more than just enlargement," she said, adding that the process was in fact "the unification of Europe."
Kos said this was both a moral necessity and a prerequisite for a stronger, more secure Europe. Enlargement, she added, was a process to "unite Europe around common values and principles."
According to the enlargement commissioner, the EU should be ready "to project stability and peace across the entire continent" as well as across the EU's strategic neighborhood including Central Asia and the Mediterranean. mr/
