Irrigation system in Bosilovo built with EU funding
Bosilovo, 5 August 2021 (MIA) - EU Ambassador David Geer, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy Trajan Dimkovski and Bosilovo Mayor Zoran Zimbakov on Thursday put into service the small scale irrigation system from the Chaushica Dam, which will water surfaces between the villages Hamzali and Drvosh.
The system provides irrigation of around 85 hectares of arable land belonging to hundreds of farmers. EU programs have provided EUR 500 million in funding.
“The EU is working on different levels to support farmers. One such level is the community level, as we can see today, with small irrigation systems, as well as expanding soil and forming farmers’ associations that will strengthen farmers,” said Ambassador Geer.
Referring to the impact of climate change, he pointed out the meaning of the EU’s Green Deal, which consists of two parts. The first part, according to Geer, is a commitment and a dedication to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, and the second part is related to the policies and programs that will help achieve it.
Deputy Minister Trajan Dimkovski pointed out that the construction of irrigation systems and maintaining existing ones is one of the key factors for agricultural production effectiveness.
“The farmers will use the Chaushica Dam water through a new, closed irrigation system that will be 7-km long, from a primary and secondary network. For the first time in 30 years, the exhaust vent of the dam which regulates water flow has been reconstructed, and the overall system enables saving water and using modern drop by drop systems,” Dimkovski said.
Welcoming the process of constructing the irrigation system, Mayor Zimbakov said that other such projects that will be very meaningful to the people of this municipality can be expected in the future. dk/ba/
