Tehran, 23 June 2025 (dpa/MIA) - Iran has attacked US military bases in Qatar and Iraq in retaliation for the bombing of its nuclear facilities, according to the Iranian state news agency IRNA.
The attack in the Qatari capital, Doha, targeted the al-Udeid Air Base, home to forces under the US Central Command.
It was initially unclear which sites were targeted in Iraq. However, Iraqi media reported that a state of maximum alert was declared and shelter orders issued at the Ain al-Asad Air Base in western Iraq.
The Qatari Ministry of Defence stated that air defences intercepted the missile attack targeting the al-Udeid Air Base, adding: "Thanks to God, the vigilance of the armed forces, and the precautionary measures, the incident did not result in any deaths or injuries."
An Israeli representative told media outlets that Iran had fired a total of 10 missiles at US targets in Qatar on Monday night. Qatar had announced the closure of its airspace shortly before the strikes.
Witnesses in Doha reported hearing explosions in the night sky for about two minutes. Flying objects, presumably drones, were also seen.
Over the weekend, the United States struck three key nuclear sites in Iran in support of Israel.
Shortly before the attacks in Qatar and Iraq were confirmed, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian wrote on X: "We did not start the war nor wanted it but we will not leave the aggression against the great Iran unanswered."
