Vienna, 16 June 2025 (dpa/MIA) - Iran has accused the International Atomic Energy Agency of failing to prevent the Israeli attacks on Tehran's disputed nuclear program.
Despite warnings from Iran, the IAEA and its head Rafael Grossi had not taken effective preventive measures, Iranian government representative Reza Najafi told a special meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors.
Najafi did not mention that Grossi had publicly warned of military strikes against nuclear facilities a few days before the Israeli offensive.
The Iranian diplomat reported that his country had already taken "special measures" to protect nuclear facilities and nuclear material.
In view of the current security situation, however, the IAEA would not be informed of these steps until later, Najafi said.
At the IAEA meeting, 10 states, including nuclear-armed Russia, China and Pakistan, joined Iran in condemning Israel's destruction of Iranian nuclear facilities in the airstrikes that began on Friday.
The group, which also included Belarus, Burkina Faso, Indonesia, Iraq, Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela, warned that Israeli attacks were undermining confidence in the international Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Speculation is growing in Iran about its possible withdrawal from the treaty, which prohibits states without nuclear weapons from building up a nuclear arsenal.
The rumours were triggered by an interview with a lawmaker on Sunday. However, parliament has not yet made a decision and the issue is not on the agenda, according to the state news agency IRNA.
