Inspection of Bechtel-Enka contract to be completed as soon as possible, says SCPC chair

Skopje, 25 May 2023 (MIA) - State Commission for Prevention of Corruption (SCPC) chair Biljana Ivanovska says parts of the Bechtel-Enka contract that produce financial liabilities for the state will be given special attention.

"We will give these articles special attention, since these are the aspects that concern the citizens the most," Ivanovska told Sitel.

She notes that the contract they received is missing the annexes.

"If we ascertain that the annexes include something more than certain managerial aspects related to the company, we will ask for them as well," says Ivanovska and adds that the contract is 200 pages long.

She says that the Commission is not reviewing only the contract but also the way in which the supervision authority was selected, its licenses, companies hired.

"We will also provide our comments on the laws related to the contract and we are paying specific attention to the procedures over the expropriated land," says Ivanovska and adds that SCPC will do its best to finish the job as quickly as possible.

If they find some abuse or negative repercussions for the state, the next step would be an initiative to the Public Prosecutor's Office.

"They also have an open case. I have met with the public prosecutor and we both agreed it would be good to see how far have the two institutions gone in their efforts and join forces towards resolving the issue," underlines Ivanovska.
