Skopje, 28 June 2025 (MIA) -- The decisions made at the NATO Summit in The Hague will be beneficial for the next generations, according to Timcho Mucunski in an interview with the US think tank Atlantic Council.
"I label it personally as a 'generational summit.' The decisions we made will have positive historical implications for coming generations," Mucunski said, adding the decisions were important also for the future investment needs of the allies.
He said it was US President Donald Trump's involvement that had made The Hague summit decisions possible.
"I would like to point out that if it wasn't for the leadership of the Trump administration and the United States, we would have never made these difficult decisions. So the credit should go where it is due," Mucunski said.
Also acknowledging the "leadership among the allies and openness to discuss and debate," the FM said that investment in defense was not only in "hard defense" but also in industry, infrastructure and cyber resilience.
"Past summits have been called 'historical' summits but the decisions here are much more than just about history," Mucunski said, adding they were "very much about our future."
In the interview, the Macedonian foreign minister also spoke about the country's contribution to NATO.
"We are one of the newer members of NATO but we are a nation that takes this NATO membership seriously, so we are above that 2% threshold," he said, adding that the country was already planning on how to reach the required 5% of GDP for defense spending.
Mucunski also said the country was strongly investing in modernizing the army and was present in NATO missions "from the Balkans to the Baltics." He said the country's servicemen and women were "brave people who represent our proud nation and contribute actively to the collective security."
"American citizens should know that their Macedonian allies are with them shoulder to shoulder," the country's top diplomat said.
The Atlantic Council is an American think tank in the field of international affairs, favoring Atlanticism, founded in 1961. Since then, the Atlantic Council has pursued the mission of “Shaping the global future together,” seeing its role as advancing and advocating constructive US leadership in the world alongside friends and allies. mr/
