Grubi-Linhart: EU integration of North Macedonia, Western Balkans more than necessary
Skopje, 18 November 2021 (MIA) – Austria will remain committed to North Macedonia starting EU accession negotiations as soon as possible, not just because the region represents an economic treasure for the Union, but also because it's crucial for a stronger Europe, Austrian Minister for European and International Affairs Michael Linhart said during a meeting with First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Political System and Intercommunity Relations Artan Grubi on Thursday.
At the meeting, Grubi’s office said in a press release, Linhart reaffirmed Austria’s support for the start of North Macedonia’s EU talks, stressing that the EU integration of the Western Balkans is more than necessary because the region belongs in Europe.
First Deputy PM Grubi briefed Austrian Minister Linhart on the political situation in the country and the reforms the government is implementing in the judiciary, administration, etc.
He underlined during the meeting that the country needs a stable, pro-European government that will implement the Ohrid and Prespa Agreements, as well as the Friendship Treaty with Bulgaria and realize capital projects aiming to improve the living standard.
The First Deputy PM also expressed hopes that North Macedonia and Bulgaria will reach an agreement by December 14, so that the country can get a green light to start negotiations.
Moreover, Grubi thanked Linhart for the continuous support Austria has offered North Macedonia’s EU integration and implementation of reforms.
Interlocutors concluded that bilateral relations are excellent in all areas and will remain so in the future.
At the meeting, they stressed close cooperation between North Macedonia and Austria in the field of economy, noting that dozens of Austrian companies have invested in the country, which sends an clear message for enhancing cooperation.
