Skopje, 3 February 2024 (MIA) - In the framework of the visit to the United States, Deputy PM for Good Governance Policies Slavica Grkovska met with Deputy Assistant Attorney-General, Bruce Swartz, who welcomed the fact that the law on property confiscation in civil proceedings is already in parliamentary procedure.
Deputy PM Grkovska and Deputy Assistant AG Swartz agreed on future exchange of good practices between the two countries, since the US applies confiscation without conviction.
Interlocutors agreed that corruption is a global problem and its uprooting is not a simple process. In this context, Grkovska said that all competent institutions must do their job in this fight, while media, investigative journalists and civil society organizations are their partners in this effort, the Deputy PM Office said in a press release.
Grkovska noted that judicial institutions should not use their independence to create a comfort zone, highlighting the importance of having sanctions in place for judges and prosecutors who act unlawfully.
Discussions also referred to the support that North Macedonia receives from its strategic partners, through investments in the strengthening of the judiciary's capacities, but also the need for tangible results, solid cases and successful confiscation, reads the press release.
