Grkovska - Papastergiou: Digitization and cyber security must go hand in hand, mutual cooperation important

Skopje, 1 November 2023 (MIA) - Deputy PM for Good Governance Policies Slavica Grkovska met Wednesday with Greece's Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou, for talks on the possibility to deepen cooperation in the area of digital transformation and cyber security, Grkovska's Office said in a press release.

Grkovska, who coordinates the process of digital transformation of society, said North Macedonia is preparing all the necessary prerequisites for the introduction of electronic identification documents, as a basis for digital transformation, and in the interest of providing efficient, fast and quality services for the citizens.

In order to build a systematic and long-term approach to digitization, she added, a National Council for Digital Transformation has been established, chaired by Deputy PM Grkovska and including all social entities in addition to representatives from the Government and the opposition.

"The Republic of Greece launched in the past month a new mobile app that will help citizens make transactions with the public sector without showing any documents. Also, one of the main reforms that the Greek Government is currently undertaking is that every citizen should have another personal identification number on their personal documents in addition to the unique citizen identification number, which will be connected to a special platform in order to receive services," reads the press release.

Interlocutors agreed that in parallel with the process of digital transformation of society, attention must also be paid to cyber security, because it is a prerequisite for successful digitization.

Minister Papastergiou said Greece was in the process of establishing a national authority on cyber security, in order to strengthen the capacities in this sphere.

Deputy PM Grkovska also raised the issue of the need to optimize processes in the public sector, regarding which she and Minister Papastergiou exchanged views on the Greek experience with the database of Greece, which contains these processes.

"The two pledged that North Macedonia and Greece will deepen mutual cooperation in the coming period and strengthen communication in the area of digital transformation of society, because the exchange of experience is key in building efficient and quality policies," adds the press release.
