Greek coast guard continues search for missing Macedonian off Chalkidiki
Athens, 12 July 2022 (MIA) - The Greek coast guard, which is resuming the search and rescue operation for the third missing Macedonian off the Chalkidiki peninsula, has included three patrolling ships, vehicles and one plane, MIA's Athens correspondent reports. Launched on Saturday afternoon, the rescue operation was under way in the past few days and is still ongoing Tuesday morning. Rescue teams and volunteers have also joined. The rescue teams are expected to also use an underwater drone, according to media reports. North Macedonia's Foreign Ministry on Monday said the mother of the missing man, whose initials were revealed as M.J., had been welcomed by the general consul in Thessaloniki, who is in close communication with the Greek relevant authorities. The two rescued Macedonian men are in good health, MIA has learned. Vasil, 25, was discharged from a hospital in Chalkidiki and Ivan, 30, is still treated in a hospital in Thessaloniki. The search and rescue mission was launched on Saturday when the three men from North Macedonia went swimming on Possidi’s Miti beach but the strong winds and waves dragged them away from the coast. Several beachgoers noticed they went missing and notified the coast guard authorities immediately. Vasil was rescued the same day after two hours in the sea, whereas Ivan was found on Sunday 19 hours after he went missing.
