Government not considering reintroducing compulsory military service at this time, says Defense Minister

Skopje, 4 October 2024 (MIA) - The idea of compulsory military service is great in theory, but not something the Government is considering at this time. All security challenges need to be considered first, a separate analysis must be prepared by the General Staff, and then the issue can be addressed, said Minister of Defense Vlado Misajlovski on Friday.
Asked whether the Government is considering reintroducing compulsory military service following the example of neighboring countries, Minister Misajlovski said "every young man should spend a part of his life like this," but other circumstances also need to be considered.
"Army barracks were previously given to municipalities, including part of the property. On the other hand, all security challenges need to be reviewed, all security structures, especially the General Staff, must prepare an analysis for this issue to then be addressed. Before entertaining such an idea, we need to look at all potential possibilities and challenges, and then have discussions. But, I believe this is good for the young spirit and every person because it is a way to identify and become a more stable person. It’s great in theory but not something the Government is currently considering," Misajlovski said after attending an exercise at Krivolak army field alongside PM Hristijan Mickoski, Chief of General Staff, Major General Sashko Lafchiski, U.S. Ambassador Angela Aggeler, and Army generals. ssh/ik/
