Goal set to conclude EU negotiations by 2030, says Kovachevski
Skopje, 5 September 2022 (MIA) - The government has decided to establish a structure for North Macedonia's EU accession negotiations, Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski said Monday. Deputy Prime Minister Bojan Marichikj will be chief negotiator and the team will also include both local experts, civil servants and experts outside of the institutions, as well as foreign experts. Kovachevski said he believes the institutions have the capacity for the EU negotiations, adding he expects quality and efficient structure able to address the challenges. The PM said the process will be an inclusive and transparent one. He called for social consensus in making headway toward the EU, for engagement of the civil sector, the business community and scholars all the while also calling on the opposition to take active part and help support the process. "The negotiations should be accelerated and closed as soon as possible. We've set a goal to conclude the negotiations by 2030. It is viable and I'm confident that North Macedonia will become a member by the next EU enlargement. We'll be committed to our country being equal to all other member states, to take part in the EU's policy creation all the while of course protecting our state interests. Our future is in the EU. We have no alternative, which is why we all need to get involved and support, to seize the chance standing in front of us and to confidently go toward full-fledged EU membership," Kovachevski told a news conference. He insisted he is confident in the capacity of the institutions and their readiness to give their best in the process. "I'm especially proud that we have come to the moment when we're discussing technical elements involving the EU negotiations. On July 19, when we opened the negotiations, we turned a new page in the Macedonian history. We'd shown we know how to act courageously like statesmen, because it is the way to paving the way for further development of both the economy and the society. By holding the first intergovernmental conference, we made a historic strategic step," PM Kovachevski said at the news conference alongside Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs Bojan Marichikj.
