Global leaders converge on New York for UN General Debate

New York, 23 September 2025 (dpa/MIA) – A speech by US President Donald Trump will kick off the 80th session of the annual General Debate of the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

Other speakers on the agenda on the first day are Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The speeches are scheduled to start at 9 am (1300 GMT).

UN Secretary General António Guterres and General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock are also to speak.

A session of the UN Security Council on the Ukraine war, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected attend, is also scheduled.

Around 150 heads of state and government are set down to speak over the week ahead, with the Middle East conflict, the war in Ukraine and the UN's precarious finances at the centre, along with the changing geopolitical role of the United States under Trump.
