Skopje, 4 April 2023 (MIA) – A comprehensive study is necessary to assess the number of people with autism spectrum disorder in North Macedonia, in order to be able to draft the adequate legislation, said the First Lady of North Macedonia, Elizabeta Gjorgievska at the “Approach to Autism” panel discussion held Tuesday in Europe House in honor of World Autism Awareness Day.
“The number of people on the autism spectrum is increasing, although we don’t have a precise figure. Which is why it is necessary to invest in daily centers, because socialization is especially important for people on the autism spectrum,” stressed Gjorgievska.
According to a press release from the President’s Office, Gjorgievska said that there is an increased awareness of people on the autism spectrum when it comes to their early diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation, and that this increased awareness will also help improve their quality of life.
The panel discussion was addressed by special educator and rehabilitator Angjela Milevska, medical student Denis Jankulovski from the “Autism AAMK” NGO and Domnika Kardula, parent of a child with autism.
“The panel discussion is an opportunity to discuss the approach to autism and the importance of a holistic approach to the treatment and research of autism, as well as other topics related to autism. The event is a part of a series of debates in healthcare realized with the support of the First Lady and the EU Ambassador to North Macedonia, David Geer, in cooperation with the Young Doctors Club and with the participation of the Association of Specialists and Young Doctors, Association of Medical Students and associations and individuals who work in this field,” said the President’s Office in the press release. ad/nn/
