Geer: No possibility for change to the negotiating framework and that position is unchanged

Skopje, 1 July 2024 (MIA) - I have always been very clear on this agreement, which was reached in July 2022 and resulted in the opening of accession negotiations and the screening process. I do not see the possibility for a change to the negotiating framework and that’s our position is unchanged following the elections, EU Ambassador David Geer stated, after today's meeting with the Minister of European Affairs, Orhan Murtezani, in response to a journalist's question about the possibility of changing the negotiation framework.
Geer described the meeting with Murtezani as a "good start," noting that they had a detailed discussion about the reform agenda, which is part of the EU's growth plan for the Western Balkans, the work done so far in the screening process, and how to build on what has been achieved.
“We look forward to developing a very close, regular, and successful working relationship with the minister and the ministry,” Geer said.
Regarding the message sent by the downgrade from Deputy Prime Minister to Minister of European Affairs, according to Geer, it is important that the process of European integration remains high on the political agenda.
“I think it’s for the government to decide what’s the most efficient way to manage its relationship with the European Union. I don’t necessarily see this as a downgrading at all. I think what is important is that the process of the European integration remains at the top of the political agenda. This is what the government says. We will judge the government on the basis of what it does, and if it does want to move forward on the European integration process then we will be very solid and committed partners,” Geer noted.
Asked about Peter Vanhoutte’s plan for the country's path to European integration, Geer said he was not sure that such a plan exists, noting that Vanhoutte is working on a project funded by Belgium to build good neighborly relations in North Macedonia and its neighbors.
“But we in the EU are not associated with that particular initiative,” Geer said.
The Minister of European Affairs, Orhan Murtezani, pointed out that any assistance in the process of joining the EU is welcome, including the help of Peter Vanhoutte, but as the newly appointed minister, he has not seen any concrete plan to be able to comment on it.
