Skopje, 26 December 2024 (MIA) - The parliamentary majority believes that political will and agreement is required on when to start the procedure of constitutional amendments, Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi said on Thursday.

"The procedure related to the constitutional changes is stipulated in the Constitution and the Rules of Procedures. The parliamentary majority believes that political will and a political agreement is required on when to start the procedure. You know that the constitutional changes take place when a two-thirds majority votes for this, and the procedure will start once this happens. Nevertheless, we cannot forbid anyone to initiate the procedure, but we think it is not good to experiment with such procedures," said Speaker Gashi.

Asked if the pre-election promise of the Worth It coalition that the constitutional amendments would be adopted by the end of the year is now broken, the Speaker said the coalition programme did not include such passage.

"I don't recall this being part of the programme. Of course, there were statements of this type, but this is a complex issue and does not depend on a single political entity, a two-thirds majority is required in Parliament. As you know, the Worth It coalition and its MPs are fully behind this and we would vote even today. However, we think it is better for the country and its citizens if we all come to an agreement. The parliamentary majority is doing everything possible to adopt the amendments when this is best for the country, once a political agreement is made and when we are assured of predictability in the process, meaning there will no vetoes in three or six months-time," said Gashi.
