Gashi - Borg: Lawmakers can contribute to settlement of OSCE challenges

Skopje, 12 November 2024 (MIA) - Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi met Tuesday with OSCE Chairperson-in-Office and Malta's Deputy PM and Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, Ian Borg, saying the meeting reaffirmed the significance the OSCE Chairpersonship attaches to parliaments and parliamentary democracy.

Speaker Gashi said the Parliament is active within the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, which plays a vital role as a link between the organization's executive branch and lawmakers, the Parliament said in a press release.

Borg briefed Gashi on the activities of Malta's OSCE Chairpersonship, referring to the efforts to reach consensus over the organization's budget and the election of a Secretary-General, Representative on Freedom of the Media, High Commissioner on National Minorities and Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR).

He assessed that the OSCE PA is one of the organization's most significant institutions, noting that MPs can contribute to the settlement of OSCE challenges through their influence on government representatives.

FM Borg also referred to North Macedonia's European integration path, saying Malta has always supported the EU enlargement policy, reads the press release.
