Former NSA head Dimovski says Mickoski was not followed or wiretapped during his term

Skopje, 2 September 2025 (MIA) - The former head of the National Security Agency (NSA) Viktor Dimovski responded in a Facebook post Tuesday to allegations of abuse at the Agency during his term regarding the following and wiretapping of then-opposition leader and current prime minister, Hrisitjan Mickoski, as well as businessmen and journalists.
In the post, Dimovski said while he was heading the NSA the leader of the then-opposition party was not subject to any special operational interest by the Agency, nor were any operational and technical measures applied against him.
Dimovski called on current NSA head Bojan Hristovski to declassify documents showing the alleged abuse, especially those related to Mickoski.
“Yesterday, serious allegations were made by the Prime Minister and the current Director of the National Security Agency regarding alleged misuse of state resources for wiretapping the former opposition leader (now Prime Minister), businessmen, and journalists by the NSA and the Intelligence Agency. Given that in a previous media briefing the period from 2019 to 2024 was mentioned, part of which I served as head of the NSA, I responsibly assert that he, as the leader of the then-opposition party, during the period from 2019 to 2022 was not subject to operational interest by the Agency, was not the subject of organized operational work, and therefore was not a target of any operational-technical measures,” Dimovski said.
The former NSA head said it is true that “during the stated period, in accordance with the Agency’s legal competencies, there was a procedure to reexamine security certificates, including for a former and current MP due to disclosing classified information, for which the appropriate criminal report was filed to the relevant Prosecutor’s Office”.
“Given the seriousness of the allegations made at yesterday’s press conference at the previous briefing at the NSA, I call on the director of the Agency to immediately and without delay declassify the documents concerning the alleged abuses, especially those related to the wiretapping of the then-opposition leader. The Macedonian public has the right to know who proposed, requested, approved and carried out the alleged wiretapping. I expect that this time there will be no hiding behind excuses such as ‘classified information with the level of state secret’, especially after several recent publications in certain ‘informed media’ that have circulated specific names of individuals allegedly targeted by the Agency, including information about the identities of employees and secret collaborators,” the former head of the NSA said.
Dimovski was the first person to head the Agency after its establishment with the reforms of the country’s security system. He led the Agency from 2019 to 2022, when he was succeeded by Zarko Miloshevski.
Dimovski’s response comes after reports that the NSA had submitted three reports to the Public Prosecutor’s Office concerning a former director and a group of NSA employees due to indications of unlawful, unprofessional and unethical conduct.

Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski and current NSA head Bojan Hristovski confirmed the reports in answer to journalists’ questions on Monday. Both Mickoski and Hristovski did not share any details, since they said the documents are classified as state secret. They said they expect those responsible to be sanctioned.
The Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Corruption told journalists that a preliminary procedure is currently underway, but they are not yet able to share more details due to the confidentiality of the procedure.
