EU’s Varhelyi urges Serbia and Kosovo to restore dialogue
Belgrade, 22 September 2021 (MIA) - European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi said Wednesday commenting on recent tensions between Serbia and Kosovo that it is imperative to exercise restraint and de-escalate the tensions, return to dialogue and ensure freedom of movement without delay, MIA’s Belgrade correspondent reports. “Unilateral actions are never a solution. They only lead to unnecessary tensions and should be withdrawn,” he tweeted. His tweet comes after Kosovo introduced new rules ending the validity of vehicle registration plates produced in Serbia. The new rules went into effect on Monday and require anyone in Kosovo whose car has Serbian registration plates to remove them and use temporary registration, which is being provided by border officials. EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell and EU special representative for the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, have had phone calls with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti in an effort to ease tensions in northern Kosovo and organize a meeting of Vucic and Kurti in Brussels, Serbia’s RTS reported. “EU’s special envoy Lajcak has returned in Brussels from Belgrade and all our efforts are aimed at de-escalating tensions and restoring dialogue,” Brussels diplomatic sources told Tanjug, RTS reported. Sources says the EU is prepared to mediate a dialogue between the two leaders, which would take place in Brussels, focused solely on settling the current situation in Kosovo. Serbian media report that regarding the implementation of the Brussels Agreement, sources close to the EU foreign affairs chief say all agreements made so far as part of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue are tabled and “no one has withdrawn them.” The EU, Quint ambassadors and the United States have called for the situation of the ground to calm down, saying it is in the interest of both Belgrade and Pristina.
