Brussels, 31 October 2024 (MIA) – Resumption of the accession process for North Macedonia depends on the constitutional change the country has committed to do, a European Commission spokeswoman has said.

She recalled that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen toured Western Balkan countries last week, including a stop in Skopje, where she stressed that the country should open negotiations by opening the Fundamentals cluster as soon as possible.

On the prospect of North Macedonia and Albania being reunited on their European path, Pisonero noted that the enlargement process is an individual merit-based process that depends on the objective progress of each EU partner countries.

As previously reported by MIA’s Brussels corresponded, the conclusions of the EU Summit, held in December 2023, state that the European Union is prepared to complete the phase of opening the accession negotiations with North Macedonia as soon as the country implements its commitment to completing the constitutional change in line with its internal procedures, as noted in the Council conclusions of July 18, 2022.
