ERC working on consumer protection measures

Skopje, 24 March 2025 (MIA) — The Energy Regulatory Commission has been working for a long time on measures to strengthen consumer protection, including introducing monthly electricity meter readings as well as meter checks following consumers' complaints, sources familiar with the matter told MIA.

According to the ERC sources, they have been developing consumer protection measures together with the Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources "to strengthen trust among some consumers who doubt the accuracy of the meters."

"The ERC remains transparent and open to suggestions and ideas from citizens as well as the expert public, regardless of whether they are organized formally or informally," the sources said.

The set of measures should come into force after a comprehensive consultation with expert associations, including Zemak and Mako-Cigre, and all stakeholders, according to the sources.

Earlier Monday at the ERC premises, ERC head Marko Bislimoski held a meeting with representatives of the Association of Engineers of the Republic of Macedonia, at which the engineers presented their proposals regarding fairer electricity billing practices.

In a press release issued after the two-hour meeting, the Association of Engineers said their proposals were heard and would be taken into consideration.

"The final wording of the amendments to the Rules for Electricity Supply will be decided on during a preparatory session, which we will be invited to attend," the release said. mr/
